The Death of Florence Tuck

by Lisa Fitzgibbon

Inspired by the landscape, legends and characters made famous in Laurie Lee’s book Cider with Rosie

A Village Tragedy

In the book ‘Cider with Rosie’ Laurie Lee writes of the tragic suicide of Elcombe resident Miss Flynn. She was found, drowned & floating in the village pond in the early hours of Monday 17th April 1922.

Miss Flynn was Florence Tuck.

Vlog 02 - The Death of Florence Tuck

Lyrics

It’s 3am, I’m awake again, again,
Rising calms the pain
Inside my head a sweet refrain
Calls my name, calls my name, calls my name

Take me to the water, take me to the sea
I’m drifting in disorder, I can feel it washing over me
But I’m not awake and I’ll never sleep
Until I feel the water wash over me

It’s cold downstairs
Amongst the smells and sleeping sounds is my whole world staring at me
I fetch some coal and stock the fire
Find my coat, and step outside
Calls my name, calls my name, calls my name

Take me to the water, take me to the sea
I’m drifting in disorder, I can feel it washing over me
But I’m not awake and I’ll never sleep
Until I feel the water wash over me

The moon she wains and lights the way from my back garden
Guiding me up Catswood Lane
Song Thrush leads me on
Down the Valley, to the pond
Calls my name, calls my name, calls my name

Take me to the water, take me to the sea
I’m drifting in disorder, I can feel it washing over me
But I’m not awake and I’ll never sleep
Until I feel the water wash over me

It’s misty by the village pond
I climb the fence and carry on
Towards the reeds where willows drape
The rising sound as dawn awakes
I give my skin unto the air
Remove my shoes, untie my hair
The water starts then soothes the pain
Inside my head one last refrain
Calls my name, calls my name, calls my name

Take me to the water, take me to the sea
I’m drifting in disorder, I can feel it washing over me
But I’m not awake and I’ll never sleep
Until I feel the water wash over me
